Frankincense and Wellness: Traditions, Aromatherapy, and Areas of Research

Frankincense is an aromatic resin from trees of the Boswellia genus, and it has been valued for thousands of years in spiritual, cultural, and wellness traditions across the world. This article looks at how frankincense is used today — in aromatherapy, self-care, and skincare — and where the modern research actually stands.

Aromatherapy and a sense of calm

The warm, resinous scent of frankincense is widely used in meditation and relaxation practices. Many people find that inhaling the aroma supports a sense of calm and focus during quiet time. Research on scent and mood is early-stage, but the tradition of using frankincense for a peaceful atmosphere is thousands of years old.

A long history of traditional use

Ancient Egyptians used frankincense in sacred rituals and everyday care; it traveled the Incense Road and the Silk Road; and it appears in the traditions of Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. That long cultural history is one reason frankincense remains popular in wellness rituals today.

Skin care

Frankincense is a common ingredient in balms, moisturizers, and facial oils, where it is used for its soothing properties on dry or irritated skin. As with any skincare ingredient, patch-test first and stop use if irritation develops.

Laboratory research on boswellic acids

Boswellic acids — compounds found in frankincense resin — have been studied in laboratory settings for anti-inflammatory and other properties. Much of this work is in cells or animal models, or draws on traditional contexts, and it does not mean frankincense treats any disease in people. We encourage you to read the primary research and to treat online health claims with healthy skepticism.
