Frankincense and Nano-Hydroxyapatite in Oral Care: What the Research Says

We often get asked why Majira Therapeutic Toothpaste pairs frankincense with nano-hydroxyapatite. This post collects what the current scientific literature actually says about these ingredients in daily oral care — and where the evidence is still emerging. It is educational, not medical advice.

Nano-Hydroxyapatite and Enamel

Nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HAp) is a synthetic form of the calcium phosphate mineral that makes up tooth enamel. A 2011 in-vitro study found nano-hydroxyapatite toothpastes supported remineralization of enamel and dentin (Tschoppe et al., Journal of Dentistry, 2011). A 2019 randomized 6-month trial in orthodontic patients found a non-fluoridated hydroxyapatite dentifrice performed comparably to a fluoridated toothpaste at slowing enamel caries progression (Schlagenhauf et al.). A 2021 randomized clinical trial in children reported hydroxyapatite toothpaste was as effective as fluoride toothpaste at treating initial caries (Paszynska et al., covered in this narrative review). A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis concluded hydroxyapatite is effective as an anti-caries ingredient even without fluoride (Clinical Evidence of Caries Prevention by Hydroxyapatite).

A double-blind randomized controlled trial also reported that a nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste reduced dentine hypersensitivity (Vano et al., Clinical Oral Investigations, 2018).

Frankincense (Boswellia) and Oral Health

Boswellia (frankincense) resin and its boswellic acids have a long history of traditional use. A clinical study found a frankincense preparation showed anti-inflammatory effects in the treatment of moderate plaque-induced gingivitis (Bamigboye et al.). More recent laboratory research found that Boswellia serrata extract reduced the growth and biofilm formation of Porphyromonas gingivalis, a bacterium associated with gum disease, and inhibited infection of human oral cells (MDPI, 2024).

The Mouth–Body Connection

Researchers have long studied the relationship between gum health and heart health. A 2025 American Heart Association scientific statement published in Circulation concludes the evidence supports an association between periodontal disease and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease — in the authors' words, “your mouth and your heart are connected” — while noting the relationship is complex and the effect of gum treatment on heart outcomes remains an active area of study (Periodontal Disease and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease). Good daily oral hygiene is a simple, sensible part of overall wellness.

Where This Meets Our Formula

Majira Therapeutic Toothpaste combines 10% nano-hydroxyapatite with frankincense and straightforward, well-known ingredients — calcium bentonite clay, sodium bicarbonate, birch xylitol, pearl powder, and activated charcoal. It contains no fluoride, SLS, or parabens. These ingredients are chosen for the qualities the research above describes: supporting enamel, gum comfort, and a clean-feeling mouth as part of a daily routine.

What the research points to for daily oral care:

  • Nano-hydroxyapatite is studied for supporting enamel remineralization

  • Frankincense / boswellic acids are studied for supporting gum comfort

  • Xylitol is a well-studied ingredient for supporting a balanced oral environment

  • Consistent brushing with a well-formulated, non-abrasive toothpaste supports oral hygiene

  • Regular dental check-ups remain the foundation of oral health
